Additional & Special Needs

At Halfway, we take great pride in our community feel and personal approach to schooling.  As such, we have an uncompromising committment to ensuring all pupils feel they belong, and are well supported to achieve personally, socially and academically. Our models of inclusive practice, relational practice and trauma informed teaching shape the way in which our pupils experience education and build relationships with one another, and with the adults in school. For further information on our universal approaches to teaching and learning, school culture and the way in which the school supports all pupils, can be found within the Curriculum section in our website, under the subsection Education at Halfway.

Alongside our universal relational culture, sits our SEND practice approach. Here, support is formalised and strategically implemented to ensure each pupil receives high quality and flexible support, enabling all pupils to fully engage in school life and have an equal opportunity to thrive and develop alongside their peers. This ranges from adaptations within routines and classroom resourcing to formalised and bespoke programmes of work, supported by wider professional teams. Regardless of the level of support, our teachers know pupils extremely well where they  establish secure, safe and accessible learning  experiences tailored to pupil needs. Miss Marklew, alongside the wider leadership team, oversees the support, adaptations and bespoke teaching programmes for all pupils across school.

Support is a Partnership

For all pupils, those requiring additional suppport or otherwise, education and personal development works best when families, schools and wider services work together. Throughout the journey through our school, collaboration with families and carers will always underpin any support put in place. Alongside any formalised meetings or discussions, families will always be central and to our approach to education and support. Class teachers, Miss Marklew, the school office and Mr Walker are always on hand liaise with to ensure we get the best experiences and supports in place for all our children.

What should you do if you feel your child needs further support?

Should you have a concern, or feel wider support is necessary, please speak to your child's class teacher either at pick up or via phone. Teachers are best placed to discuss and implement any adaptations or adjustments and are more than happy to talk at length about how best we can help.  It may be that through talking with class teachers, Miss Marklew takes the lead on supporting your child and investigating further whether formalised support is needed.

Not all support is school based. Should you be experiencing a need for support at home, advice on parenting or advice on where to seek support, please come into school and speak with us. We have regular sessions in school with our link Family Intervention Service worker, Diane Rogers, who is available to meet families and provide support and wider services to parents. Please do not hesitate to come into school and speak with us; we are always keen to help.
